Geoff Fergusson - Our Guest Inventor

At Milford School we had an inventor called Geoff come to talk to all of the Year 6's.  He has explained how his amazing inventions work and he told us about his inventor’s life. One of his inventions is a non-toxic pest trap.  It is called 'Atractem' and the yellow plastic attracts whiteflies which can get stuck on the cooking oil it has been dipped in.  This pest control system is environmentally friendly as it can be washed and used over again. It stops harmful chemicals from needing to be used on tomato plants which whiteflies damage.  His inventions were very interesting and useful.  His family are inventors too and he showed us a book of inventors including his family and himself.  We gave him a warm welcome to the Milford Primary School.

Be A Young Inventor!

At Milford School, Year 6 students are learning about inventions and inventors in Term 3 in a Social Sciences topic titled 'Be a Young Inventor!' An invention is a object that has been made first or has been upgraded. A person who invents something is called an inventor and inventors try hard to discover the secret of what technology can do and create an object that can help people. Sometimes an invention can be good and some can be rather bad (guns, bombs, etc.). Inventors fail and fail on what they are trying to do but mostly, they keep on trying until they get what they want. Inventors can become really famous and rich. Sometimes inventing can be dangerous and some can freak people out when they are first invented like X-rays did. We are learning how to use Internet research skills to search for famous inventors such as Thomas Edison, The Wright Brothers, Alexander Graham Bell, Sir Thomas Crapper etc. We are enjoying our topic this term!

Recycling

At Milford School we have started a brand new recycling system. Each class has been given a green plastic recycling bin. We are allowed to put papers, newspapers and cardboards into this bin. We put other rubbish in the other bin. We are trying to be environmentally friendly and recycle all paper.  Everyone is trying hard to be tidy kiwis for the environment.

We also have a little yellow bucket with a lid for compost. We are allowed to put fruit and vegetable scraps, paper towels and papers and lunch wrap in the recycling bins.          

                                  

Book donation

As part of our book fair, books can be donated to Milford School. My Grandpa has written a book called, “New Zealand History”. It has a Korean part, a New Zealand part and some photos. There’s a photo of my brother when he was little. My grandfather has given the book that he’s written to lots of people including Mrs. Smits (my teacher) and the office. It took 4 years for him to finish the book. My Grandpa is a doctor and he enjoyed writing his historical book.
