Spellathon!

On 17^th of June, Milford School had a Spellathon to fundraise for the school. The lists and the sponsorship forms were given out about 2 weeks before the event and students who were participating had to learn their words and get as many sponsorships as they could. For example, if a person sponsors 10 cents per question and if the participate who got sponsored gets 25 out of 25, the person who sponsored have to donate $2.50. Milford School had a great time doing Spellathon and we all improved our spelling knowledge.

On Tuesday, 28 June, there was a Milford School Idol Final Competition. Our 7 finalists performed songs that they have chosen in front of the audience and very critical judges. Caitlin, Alexandra, Anna, Kate, Rhiana, Claire and Laura did their best and sang their hearts out. The audience voted…. And… there is only ONE WINNER… to find out more about MILFORD SCHOOL IDOL, please come to our Friday’s Sharing Assembly at 2.00pm and you will find out who the winner is.

Year 5 Auckland Zoo Trip

On 15^th June, Room 5, Room 3 and Room 6, the Year 5’s, had a trip to the Auckland Zoo. Our topic this term was Animal Adaptations. We were spilt up into four groups of 6 or 7. My group headed to the Pridelands area first, where the giraffes, zebras, rhinos, ostriches and springboks were. We took some notes down of the animal habitat, or where they live, and the adaptation of the animal, which means the animal’s special feature. Next we moved to the otters. An otter’s teeth are very sharp and can bite really hard things. After the otters, we moved over to the sea-lions. We raced down to see the sea-lions performing tricks for us in the water. I really liked the sea-lions. My favourite animal was the elephant, whose name was Burma. We also had a ‘classroom session’. I learnt that the giraffe’s neck only has 7 bones, just stretched out long. We learnt a lot of new things on our trip. Alicia Oswald said she had a great time at the zoo!

Year 4 Rocky Shore Trip

On Monday 16^th May 2011 the year 3 and 4 syndicates went on a beach trip to Milford beach. They went to learn more about rock pools and their inhabitants. They learnt lots from the trip, including facts like crabs have ten legs (Miss Hopkirk didn’t know that). They thoroughly enjoyed it and learnt heaps more knowledge that they didn’t know before. Maybe you should go down to a beach and look in the rock pools there- who knows you might find something interesting!

School Assembly

On Fridays, Milford School has a whole school assembly. We sing songs and listen to sport reports that people have either been to or seen the event. Each assembly we have a year group that chooses a person from each class to come up the front to share some new learning with the rest of the school. Every so often we have a sharing assembly for parents to come along to as well!

Senior Netball

Senior Netball is Netball for the Year 5 & 6 students. Year 5 student’s play on Mondays and the teams range from Teams 3 – 6. The Year 6 students play on Wednesdays and range from Teams 1 - 2. The Year 6 netballers are still in their grading games to see which teams they will play against on the Netball Field day. After the Field Day on July 6^th the teams will face off against teams in their grade.

The ICAS Competitions

The ICAS competitions are competitions that year 4, 5 and 6 students can enter, they are graded with: participation, credit, distinction or a high distinction. The subjects that the students can enter are Computer, Maths, Science, Writing, Spelling and English. Each competition has questions of basic and deeper knowledge of the category. When finished the competition is sent off to Australia and is marked by computers then is sent back with a certificate stating what grade the student has achieved.

Recycling

At Milford School we have started a brand new recycling system. Each class has been given a green plastic recycling bin. We are allowed to put papers, newspapers and cardboards into this bin. We put other rubbish in the other bin. We are trying to be environmentally friendly and recycle all paper.  Everyone is trying hard to be tidy kiwis for the environment.

We also have a little yellow bucket with a lid for compost. We are allowed to put fruit and vegetable scraps, paper towels and papers and lunch wrap in the recycling bins.          

                                  

The Science Roadshow

On Monday the 30^th of May, the Year 6’s went to Wairau Intermediate and attended the Science Roadshow sponsored by Fonterra. The hosts were Laura and Shane. They taught us about heat and temperature. We also learnt about how negative 273 degrees Celsius is the lowest temperature which is also called Absolute Zero (0 degrees Kelvin). There were a lot of exhibits for the students to look at and some of them were “hands on” activities, like the keyboard, which you play with your feet. Another one was a chairlift, which you had to sit in a chair and pull a chain to lift yourself up and so on. Another of the topics we were focusing on was our Five Senses, which are taste, smell, hear, touch and sight. We learnt that things we see are upside down for our eyes, but the brain is clever enough to turn that thing the right way. Laura told us about a competition, in which there were four hands-on activities and whenever we did that particular activity, we had to explain what that activity was about. When we did, we could get hole punch on our card which we could get to enter the competition. Once we had completed at least two activities, we could put our cards in a box. A little while later, Laura plunged her hand in the box and pulled out 2 names. These names were Sam Nicholson and Jack Oh from Room 2. Nicole Canuto, a Year 6 from Room 1 thought it was really interesting and she liked it a lot! This was an opportunity not to be missed!

Milford Idol

Milford Idol is going to be happening in week 7.  Milford Idol is basically like American Idol but it is held at Milford School. Children enter in Milford Idol and then sing their own song that they have chosen to perform. At the moment we are holding Auditions in the school hall on Tuesdays and Thursdays. 

I have entered Milford Idol before and trust me, IT’S REALLY AWESOME!

I performed a play with my best friend Elizabeth. Lots of people in our school entered and sang.

Every second year our school holds a Milford Idol for every body to come and see/enter.

Janice from Room One said, “It’s very entertaining for people to watch”.

                                                                     

Book donation

As part of our book fair, books can be donated to Milford School. My Grandpa has written a book called, “New Zealand History”. It has a Korean part, a New Zealand part and some photos. There’s a photo of my brother when he was little. My grandfather has given the book that he’s written to lots of people including Mrs. Smits (my teacher) and the office. It took 4 years for him to finish the book. My Grandpa is a doctor and he enjoyed writing his historical book.
